#82 – Lane Fenner

Flanker – 6’5″ 202 lbs – 1965-1967

“Lane Fenner was in.”  There are many ways to spark a rivalry between teams and school and Florida State and Florida can check off just about all of them.  That includes controversial calls that one side will never forget.  In the 1966 game with FSU trailing 22-19 with 17 seconds to play, probably the most controversial call in the series history occurred.  Lane Fenner came into the game after not having played a snap all day, actually his first of the season, and raced down the sidelines toward the endzone.  Interestingly, he was in the game for Ron Sellers who had the wind knocked out of him the previous play.  From the 45 yardline Gary Pajcic rolled to his right and fired a bomb to the endzone that Fenner seemed to catch in bounds for the would-be winning touchdown.  The umpire racing down the sideline saw it a different way, though, and ruled him out of bounds.  Look at the picture above and you be the judge.  Fenner will always be most remembered for that single play, but he had a solid senior season in 1967 with 25 catches for 300 yards and 1 touchdown before the bowl game, finishing 2nd in each category to the Hall of Famer Ron Sellers.  He left Tallahassee with the best game of his career, an 8 catch 87 yard performance against Penn State in the Gator Bowl.  Fenner would go on to be drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the 7th Round of the 1968 NFL Draft and spent one year with the team playing in 11 games.
