#87 – Phil Williams

Wide Receiver – 5’10″ 170 lbs – 1978-1981

Phil Williams isn’t probably the first name that comes to mind when you think of Florida State wide receivers, but he contributed nicely in his four years in Tallahassee.  His first 3 years wearing the garnet and gold, Williams combined for 34 catches and 478 yards with 2 touchdown grabs.  He would nearly double those numbers as a senior with a 22 catch 413 yard 1 touchdown season.  That was good enough to lead the team in receiving yards while giving him the top yards per catch average at a very impressive 18.8 yards. He especially played well during the famed 1981 “Octoberfest” when he had a 86 yard outing against Pittsburgh, a career best 92 yards against Notre Dame, and a 65 yard 1 touchdown performance against LSU.   While he was a solid player on the field, he was excellent off of it.  In 1981 he became just the 3rd player at the time and only 7th all-time to be named an NCAA Academic All-American.
