At The Territory the past few years, we’ve done a quite a few “Greatest” polls and tournaments including “Greatest Player”, “Greatest Play”, “Greatest Home Victory”, “Greatest Road Victory”, etc. The way the “Greatest Player” tournament was set up, we were able to come up with an All-Time Florida State team.
This offseason, I want to take that idea a little bit further and first, come up with an All-Decade team for the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and the first 4 years of the 2010s. After that’s completed, I’m ready to go with a face off between those all-decade teams to find out which is the greatest decade of players in FSU history and what order the rest of decades fall into. This will all begin in February after recruiting and signing day has come and gone and we enter the doldrums of FSU football. I have what I think are some pretty good lists already prepared for most of the decades, but I’m struggling some with the earlier years, particularly the 1950s. One reason is lack of stats and record keeping in that decade and another is how much the game has changed and my inability to really place players at a position in some cases. For instance, I have virtually no way of knowing who was a cornerback and who was a safety early on FSU history, therefore I’ve just grouped them together as defensive backs. So, below I’ve attached images of what I’ve come up with thus far. If you have suggestions, comments, etc before we get this started in a few weeks, let me know. I may or may not heed your calls, but I’m willing to take them into consideration…especially for the 50s and 60s!!
