#5 – Jameis Winston
Jameis Winston is a 6’4″ 227 lbs quarterback out of Hueytown, AL. Winston was just announced last week as the starting quarterback heading into the 2013 season. In case you haven’t heard, he’s supposed to be pretty good. Tall, strong armed, athletic, smart, charismatic, and a natural leader he has received more hype than any other player since at least Dan Kendra and maybe more than any other Seminole in history. None of that guarantees that he’ll be successful on the field, and particularly as a redshirt freshman. Florida State fans are, appropriately, optimistic though. His 12-15, 205 yard, 2 touchdown performance in the 2013 Garnet and Gold game did nothing but put that hype into the stratosphere and give Seminole fans a reason to be excited. Only time will tell, but the Seminoles should have a good one.
#5 – Reggie Northrup
Reggie Northrup is a 6’1″ 223 lbs linebacker out of Jacksonville, FL. Northrup was one of the more impressive freshman defenders last season and enters his sophomore season competing for a spot at weakside linebacker. Athletic and strong, he made an impact on special teams and also logged a fair amount of snaps on defense. For the season, he played in 12 games making 10 tackles. Northrup is competing with Terrence Smith for the top spot on the depth chart this fall.
Theon Rackley
Theon Rackley was a 6’2″ 228 lbs linebacker out of Tallahassee, FL. Rackley was a 4 year letterman for the Noles from 1995-99, serving in mainly a backup role. He played in 11 games as a redshirt freshman in 1996 and made 26 tackles with 1 tackle for loss. In ’97, with a veteran group of linebackers and the return of Sam Cowart from a knee injury, Rackley saw his playing time decrease slightly and he finished the year with just 18 tackles playing in 10 games. He took on a larger role with the ’98 defense and finished with his best year, statistically, totaling 42 tackles with 1 tackle for loss. During Florida State’s wire-to-wire ’99 National Championship season, Rackley backed up a trio of excellent linebackers in Brian Allen, Tommy Polley, and Bradley Jennings. He saw action in each of FSU’s games that season and finished with 40 tackles. He also had an interception return for a touchdown in the season opener against Louisiana Tech.
