15 Days Until Seminole Football

(as of this week, Greg Dent is no longer listed on the official FSU roster)

#15 – Mario Edwards Jr.

Mario Edwards Jr. is a 6’3″ 277 lbs defensive end out of Gautier, MS. Edwards is one of the most important pieces of the FSU puzzle this season with the losses of Tank Carradine, Bjoern Werner, and Brandon Jenkins to the NFL. Although he played in 11 games as a true freshman in 2012, he did not live up to the expectations that many had. That is moreso due to the pressures of being rated the #1 recruit out of high school than anything. He did, however, show up a little heavy last year at just around 300 lbs. He is noticibly slimmer this season and that will hopefully improve his quickness and stamina. There is no doubting his power at the position, but Edwards needs to become a complete defensive end for the Seminoles and provide a good number of snaps for the defense to be close to as successful as they were in 2012. Personally, I think he’ll take that next step and become a solid starter for the Noles as a sophomore.

In keeping with the Mario Edwards theme, we’ll do a father/son day today.

Mario Edwards was a 6-2 195 lbs cornerback out of Gautier, MS. Edwards was a 4-year letterman for the Noles from 1995-99. He played sparingly as a true freshman in 1995 making just 6 tackles on the season. He did make contributions on special teams, however, with a block punt and 24 yard touchdown return to open the scoring against North Carolina in 1995. He again served a reserve role for the Seminole in 1996 backing up more experienced players. Edwards came back in the ’98 season after missing ’97 with a redshirt to see his role expanded. Though he still came up with just 20 tackles on the season, he had 11 pass breakups on the year and one of the more memorable performances in FSU history against Wake Forest. Edwards picked off an FSU Record 4 passes against the Demon Deacons in 1998, all but 2 of his 6 interceptions on the season. In 1999, while he didn’t record an interception, his 24 tackels and, particularly, his 9 passes defended, helped FSU to a wire-to-wire National Championship. Edwards was selected in the 6th Round of the 2000 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys and spent 4 seasons there playing in 58 games with 47 starts at cornerback. He ended his career in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers playing in 15 games.
