It's not a mathematical feat. He's not calculating the digits as he recites. He's just reciting the digits from memory. It's a memory feat, not a mathematical feat. Now if he was solving the equation
pi/4 = 4 arctan(1/5) - arctan(1/239)
in his head and arriving at the digits while he was reciting, then THAT would be a mathematical feat. ;)
